The Southern Explorer'Working together for each other'
The Southern Explorer is considered the definitive
guide to
the bounty of treasures both natural and man made, for
tourists who intend exploring our special piece of Africa.
This user-friendly route guide is designed to help visitors
to plan their precious holiday time wisely and
highlights ‘must see’ tourist attractions in
the region.
The Southern Explorer Association strives to ensure that
certain standards are met in terms of service and
advertised hours by all participating members. The
spectacular KwaZulu Natal South Coast is home to many
talented artists and crafters. Initiated by Tourism
Margate, the Southern Explorer craft route was started in
1996. This publication is now the result of the
collaborative efforts of individual advertisers who in June
2002 formed the Southern Explorer Association.
With the assistance of the Ugu Regional Council this now
includes advertisers from the entire Ugu region stretching
from Umkomaas in the North, to Port Edward in the South and
inland to Harding. Eleven rural craft outlets inviting
visitors to venture inland to experience some breathtaking
scenery and to experience the rural lifestyle. Besides arts
and crafts, the hospitality and entertainment industry are
now also part of the Southern Explorer stable, and we
encourage the public to take to the country and explore.
The Samango Monkey
The Southern Explorer Association has chosen the rare
Samango monkey (cercopithecus mitis) as a mascot and logo.
The silhouetted image of the Samango monkey serves to sign-
post Southern Explorer members and is used for branding the
various Southern Explorer routes.
Besides symbolizing the close relationship between man and
nature, the Samango displays unique qualities synonymous
with those of the Southern Explorer. This regal little
monkey found in the coastal scarp forests of our region, is
shy and gentle, yet characteristically inquisitive and
exploratory by nature. The Samango is a highly social
animal forming very strong family units which serve to ward
off predators and help in defending food resources.
Natural Beauty and Adventurous Spirit
Our region is blessed with some of the finest natural
beauty Africa has to offer. Here amongst the subtropical
forests and sun drenched golden beaches is a paradise
waiting to be explored. Already famous for the annual
sardine run, the Indian Ocean also offers some of the
finest diving, whale and dolphin watching, and fishing in
South Africa. Nature reserves boasting a wealth of fauna
and flora, spectacular farmlands and breathtaking rural
areas, all complement the vast marine treasures of the
region.
For the more adventurous, one can go mountain biking, horse
riding or partake in an extreme challenge such as sea
kayaking, abseiling, white water rafting, gorge swinging or
shark diving. For the more conservative, the region offers
eleven fine golf courses and a number of other excellent
sports facilities. Why not unwind with a sundowner or
experience some of the scrumptious cuisine in one of the
quaint restaurants before retiring to one of the many fine
accommodation retreats.
